Prior to fire ants in the state, Louisiana used to have much more ticks and tick-borne diseases. While fire ants may not directly kill ticks, their presence in an area could potentially disturb tick habitats or compete with them for resources, which might indirectly affect tick populations. Much of our knowledge of ticks in Louisiana pre-date the introduction of fire ants. We are currently conducting surveys around Louisiana to determine which species we have present. This will hopefully inform us of the potential for tick-borne diseases in Louisiana.
